"Irma is the rare kind of mathematician who can decode both algorithms and policy agendas, and explain them to a room full of people.
Whether she’s tackling AI ethics or digital rights, she brings sharp logic, deep insight, and a generous dose of humanity. A brilliant professional, and someone you definitely want on your side when the equations get complicated."

AI Risks
I offer freelance services to uncover the socio-technical, legal and systemic risks caused by AI
Up your team's AI knowledge with custom AI literacy trainings.
Navigate the complex regulatory landscape (AI Act, GPSR, PLD, ISO42001 and global developments).
Data and AI governance architecture design
About me
I have an academic background in mathematics and computer science, as well as a professional background as an AI policy advisor, a public speaker and as an AI researcher. With both technical and regulatory expertise, I am well placed to help you tackle technical and legal AI challenges.
Mathematics, AI and public interest
AI standards expert
In 2024, I contributed to the EU AI Act industry standards as technical expert in JTC21 (CEN/CENELEC). Right now, organizations are stuck waiting for these standards—because until they are officially published, teams are left guessing on how to actually comply. How will bias be defined? What triggers a discriminatory AI classification? How do you effectively mitigate these risks? I can help you understand what (not) to expect from the forthcoming industry standards.

AI policy projects
In my research project for the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, we meet Techie, a responsible data scientist who is asked to create a fair hiring algorithm, which turns out to be highly complex. Who gets to decide what's fair? When are automated decisions fair enough?
Standardization Seminar
In collaboration with Algorithm Audit, I organized a seminar for the Dutch public sector on what (not) to expect from the upcoming AI Act safety standards. What can we do to prevent another child-benifit scandal (kindertoeslagenaffaire) from happening?

(Un)fair AI recruitment
A collaboration with StepStone on the legal challenges of automated recruitment. I provided a presentation on how to choose fairness metrics, and advised the responsible AI team on what (not) to use AI for to stay compliant.
AI Act standards expert
As a Dutch delegate through Algorithm Audit, I engage in discussions on fairness, non-discrimination and data quality requirements in AI Act standards. This means I have a unique insight into the future of AI governance requirements in the EU.
Feels fair?
AI in HR, Capacity Building Workshops
As part of the Horizon Europe BIAS project, I facilitated capacity-building workshops for HR professionals and AI experts on the responsible deployment of AI in human resources. How can we operationalise Value Sensitive Design from a multi-stakeholder perspective?
"Irma helped us define the legal and mathematical aspects of non-discrimination in AI in the context of recruitment.
We found great value in her robust knowledge of both the regulation and the technical aspects of the issue, and her fresh and always engaging perspectives. Plus, she’s fun to work with!"
